Memphis

poetry picture

My mind keeps traveling back

To where we came off the track

But in the corners of my mind

Good times are still too hard to find.

Why did my choice seem clear

Love found a way to disappear

Am I right to still point blame

Addictions should be hung in shame.

Who really knows if Memphis, Tennessee

Was ever right for you and me

And if yesterday was really so long ago

Why does it still haunt me so?

I've learned how much a heart can take

I survive the many times it can break

Is love only a game we play

When it's so easy to walk away.

I try to tell myself I'm better off

Like getting rid of an annoying cough

Trouble is I still get those blues

Still can’t shake off old news.

Who really knows if Memphis, Tennessee

Was ever a choice for you and me

Why does today move so slow

And why does it taunt me so?

We fall in love then fall apart

We learn but never get smart

Why does losing at love feel like a crime

And caring such a waste of time.

Love seems to come and go so fast

The die are tossed snake eyes are cast

Why does time after time never flow

Should I even care I let you go?

Who really knows if Memphis, Tennessee

Was ever the place for you and me

And will tomorrow ever really show

The one who really wants me so?
