Sunrise in Harlem

The rays of the days
Creep along the highway
A paved highway of dreams
Or so it seems
We wake up to our nightmares
Which we've labeled reality
Black versus white, life versus strife
Chess pieces in this game of life
Are you a pawn or are you a knight?
The sun rises in Harlem
The canary reveals
Reveals a bastard without pity
And a slut of 13
Her fruits not yet ripe
Legs in division
Subtraction of hopes
Addition of tears
And this goes on throughout the years
They embrace in the sunset
For they shun the light
Neither understand the damage that has been done
Only if they knew what they've become
Then, only, then would they not fear the sun
